The 16-year-old defenceman has 10 assists in his first 26 games with the Buzzers this season.
“Playing in the OJHL has been a great experience for me and has challenged me to develop my game to compete at an elite level,” Connors told the OJHL. “The speed, skill, level, toughness and attention to detail is a big step up from playing U16 and playing at this level forces you to adapt to a much more advanced game.
“I was lucky enough to be picked by a team like St. Mike’s, whose history is unrivaled in hockey. Every time I walk into the arena, I look at the banners hanging from the rafters and see the legends of the game and it inspires me to create my own pathway to professional hockey.”
This year’s team has impressed the Scarborough resident.
“St. Mike’s as a team is filled with players committed to playing at the next level but more importantly, from Day 1 they welcomed me into the dressing room and helped me with the adjustment to the league.” he said. “We are truly a team and I look forward to arriving at the rink every day. If we are not at the rink we are still in communication, and I consider my team my extended family.
“Our coaching staff and owner are committed to each player’s individual success and have provided me with the guidance and tools to help me with my goal of playing professional hockey. I look forward to improving my game and being ready to play in Hockey East and honoured to be given that chance by the University of New Hampshire.
Longtime Buzzers Head Coach and General Manager Rich Ricci has been impressed by his young defenceman.
“We are very happy to announce Jayden’s commitment to UNH,” Ricci told the OJHL. “Jayden is our youngest player but plays like a veteran. He is a bit of a throwback kid, old school mindset. He is a gifted skater with incredible agility and escapability. He plays a physical game and contributes offensively. We see a much higher offensive ceiling for him.”
The Buzzers host the Stouffville Spirit Friday and visit Stouffville Saturday night.
Congratulations to Jayden and best of luck in the OJHL and NCAA!
The OJHL has had more than 40 NCAA Division I scholarship commitments already this season.
